Donald Trump stated that he has ordered the Pentagon to begin the process of identifying and releasing government documents on extraterrestrial life and unidentified flying objects (UFOs).
“Based on the tremendous interest that has been shown, I will instruct the Secretary of Defense (Pete Hegseth) and other relevant departments and agencies to begin the process of identifying and releasing government files related to extraterrestrial life, unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), and unidentified flying objects (UFO), as well as all other information connected to these very complex, but extremely interesting and important issues,” Trump wrote on the network Truth Social, NBC reported.
His announcement followed an interview by former U.S. President Barack Obama on a podcast hosted by Brian Tyler Cohen.
Obama said that aliens exist, but later clarified that he believes there is “a good chance that life exists” in the universe, adding that during his term he did not see evidence of extraterrestrials.
Asked by reporters about Obama’s statements, Trump said that Obama had disclosed classified information and assessed that “he should not be doing that.”
Following hearings in 2024, the Pentagon announced that it had received hundreds of reports of unidentified aerial phenomena, including 21 cases requiring further analysis due to anomalous characteristics or behavior, but that no evidence of extraterrestrial activity had been found.
Responding to Trump’s directive, Hegseth posted a screenshot of Trump’s message along with alien and salute emojis.
Some lawmakers also reacted to the announcement.
Senator John Fetterman, alluding to the series The X-Files, told Fox News that releasing “all the X-Files” could be a bipartisan issue.
Representative Anna Paulina Luna thanked Trump and announced possible hearings on the matter.
