On January 20, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order banning the display of any flag other than the American flag at embassies, both at home and abroad. This decision, implemented through the State Department, marks the end of the official use of symbols such as flags representing the LGBTQ+ community and the “Black Lives Matter” movement in American diplomatic missions, writes BFM TV.
“Effective immediately, only the flag of the United States of America is authorized to be flown in American facilities.” This is a symbol of the universal principles of justice, freedom, and democracy that all Americans share,” the memo reads.
Despite this general ban, two exceptional flags are still allowed: the flag of prisoners of war and missing in action, as well as the flag of hostages and wrongfully detained.
The measure is part of a broader policy by the Trump administration that seeks to eliminate diversity in federal institutions. The White House has already ordered the suspension of the Diversity, Equality, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) program, which removes previous benefits for minority groups in employment and other initiatives.
The White House justifies this decision with the “constitutional principle of equality without regard to race” and promoting a system based solely on merit.
