The administration of US President Donald Trump will expand the ban or restriction on entry into the country from citizens of 19 to citizens of more than 30 countries, said US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.
Such measures were announced after a man from Afghanistan was accused of shooting two members of the US National Guard in Washington. One of them died, the other was injured. The arrested Afghan, who emigrated to America after its withdrawal from his country in 2021, pleaded not guilty.
Previously, in June, the Republican US administration banned entry to the US for citizens from 12 countries and restricted access for citizens from seven others.
Following the attack on the guardsmen, measures against these countries were tightened, and they include Afghanistan, Somalia, Iran, and Haiti. This week, Noem announced via social media the inclusion of citizens from more countries, and this morning in a conversation with Fox News host Laura Ingraham, she added that President Trump is considering which countries will be added to the list. She did not provide new specifics, other than saying the number of such countries would be “over 30.”
Ingraham asked Noem if the travel ban was being extended to 32 countries and which countries would be added to the current 19.
“I wouldn’t be more precise with the numbers, but it’s over 30. And the President continues with the consideration,” Noem said.
The Department of Homeland Security did not respond to journalists’ questions about when the updated travel ban might take effect and which countries would be included.
