The man who reported Alija Balijagić to the police, leading to the dangerous fugitive’s arrest after nearly a month on the run, is local resident and hunter Dragan Bojović, who acted heroically at a very dangerous moment.

“I was returning home with my wife, it was around 10 PM. One of my dogs suddenly stepped in front of the car and wouldn’t move. The snow was falling heavily. I got out to move the dog away from the car when I saw a man hiding in the bushes. I approached the spot and saw the footprints. They were small footprints in the snow, and I immediately realized that it was an older person, so I told my wife that it was Alija,” Dragan told RINA.

He immediately got in his car and left the scene but without hesitation called the police and informed them that he suspected Alija Balijagić was in their village.

“At that point, everyone became scared for our safety, because we thought Balijagić might have seen where we went and would come to kill us. The police said they were waiting for a warrant for the SAJ (Special Anti-Terrorist Unit) to go to the location, and they told us to lock ourselves in and not leave the house, so we did,” Dragan added.

The police soon arrived, and Balijagić was found by the snow tracks in a house located above the spot where Dragan had seen him.

“He was obviously exhausted, and despite seeing that I had spotted him, he didn’t go far but went into that house and fell asleep there. We were scared; it’s not easy when you know a dangerous killer is in your immediate vicinity. Now they ask me if I’m afraid he’ll escape from prison and come back to get revenge on us. I hope it won’t come to that,” said this national hero.

CAUGHT IN A HOUSE

Balijagić had been hiding in one of the houses he had broken into, and the police were led directly to him by the tracks he left in the snow.

“It has been talked about for several days that he was in our area, hunters spotted him and notified the police. He had passed through this village around twenty years ago, breaking into houses and hiding. That’s what he did now. He hid from the villagers, avoiding densely populated areas. The house where he was found is very remote, there are hardly any other houses in the vicinity,” a resident of the village of Goleši told RINA.

The house where he was found and arrested was empty, and photos taken at the scene show the interior, including the bed where he spent the night. It is not known how many nights he spent there.

During his escape, he covered over 150 kilometers through very difficult terrain. What worked in the killer’s favor was the fact that he knew the terrain well.

“We unofficially heard that he was drunk, or rather that he had fallen asleep drunk, and when the police woke him up, he was disoriented and asked who they were and what they wanted from him,” added our source.
