Ruben Torres Maldonado from Chicago, the father of two U.S. citizen children, was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents at a time when his daughter is battling cancer.
Maldonado’s trial is scheduled for Thursday, and his lawyers are expected to address the public after the hearing.
Local leaders and attorneys have called for Maldonado’s release, who has been in America since 2003, so he can continue caring for his sixteen-year-old daughter Ofelia, who is being treated for a rare and aggressive form of metastatic cancer.
Maldonado was arrested over the weekend at the “Niles Home Depot” store. His partner and the mother of their daughter said that the stress has taken a heavy toll on their family.
“He’s a great man. He’s a taxpayer, he’s a wonderful father, and I need his support. Yesterday my daughter broke down. She cried for hours. She wasn’t feeling well, and on top of everything, she just kept saying how much she misses her dad,” said Sandibel Hidalgo Herrera, Torres’s partner.
“And you can hear the administration saying that they’re in Chicago going after violent criminals, people who destroy our community, that they’re here to catch the worst of the worst,” said State Representative Will Guzzardi, a Democrat.
“What I want everyone to take away from today is that this weekend, and every day, they’re actually catching the best of the best,” he added.
Assistant Secretary of DHS, Tricia McLaughlin, issued the following statement:
“On October 18, U.S. Border Patrol conducted a targeted immigration operation which resulted in the arrest of Ruben Torres Maldonado, a criminal illegal alien from Mexico.
“His criminal history shows a record of common traffic violations, including multiple charges for driving without insurance, driving without a valid license, and speeding. During the arrest, he failed to comply with officers’ instructions, attempted to flee in his vehicle, and struck a government vehicle. He will remain in ICE custody until deportation. This is nothing more than a desperate attempt to keep a criminal illegal alien in our country. The Trump administration stands for the rule of law and the American people.”
The DHS stated that Maldonado will remain in ICE custody until deportation.
