Felix Baumgartner, the renowned Austrian extreme athlete who gained global fame for his spectacular jump from the edge of space, tragically passed away a week ago in Italy.
Felix died in a paragliding accident near Porto Sant’Elpidio when his paraglider crashed into a hotel swimming pool.
It was initially suspected that the famous athlete suffered a heart attack during the flight. However, the autopsy revealed that the causes of Felix Baumgartner’s death were a fractured neck and fatal spinal cord injuries.
Camera Malfunction Suspected in Fatal Crash
The public prosecutor’s office in Italy is now attempting to reconstruct the final minutes of the flight. Currently, all evidence suggests that a camera, which was on the aircraft, could be the cause of the fatal fall.
Reportedly, the camera was not adequately mounted on the paraglider. Investigators suspect that it detached during the flight and struck the center of the propeller, causing a malfunction. This led to Baumgartner losing control of the aircraft and crashing to the ground from a great height.
The aircraft was owned by the local airport, and an investigation is currently underway to determine who was responsible for mounting the camera. Experts appointed by the prosecution are analyzing the technical condition of the equipment. They will attempt to retrieve video footage from the memory card to uncover the precise causes of the accident.
Witnesses to the accident reported seeing the aircraft fall in a spiral, with one wing folded, and that it was impossible to control.
