The Serbian Orthodox Church today observes the Descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles, Pentecost, the Feast of the Holy Trinity, or Duhovi (Pentecost).

It is one of the biggest holidays in the Serbian Orthodox Church and is celebrated on the 50th day after Easter and the tenth day after Ascension Day.

This holiday is called the Holy Trinity because, according to the Gospels, in addition to the Holy Father and the Son, the third person of the Holy Trinity – the Holy Spirit – physically appeared on this day.

Duhovi also represent the “birthday” of the Christian church and are also called Trojice, Trojičin dan, and the Descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles.

In terms of significance, it is the third holiday, after Easter and Christmas, and like the greatest and most joyful Christian holiday, it is also celebrated for three days.

Among Serbs and even more often among Russians and Greeks, this holiday is also called Pentecost.

The celebration continues for the entire week, and there is no fasting, as it is a so-called “trapava nedelja” (non-fasting week).

The first day of Duhovi or Pentecost is dedicated to the Gospel event, the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles, Christ’s disciples.

Churches are decorated with greenery, and the red floor is covered with grass.

As Saint Gregory the Theologian wrote, greenery was previously brought into homes as well.

Believers offer daily prayers to the Holy Spirit; it is invoked during the coronation of rulers, all ordinations, at the beginning of episcopal councils, at baptisms in the church…

As the Police Day and Ministry of Internal Affairs Day of Serbia, it is celebrated in memory of 1862, when the Serbian gendarmerie, on this holiday, played a decisive role in the conflicts near Belgrade’s Čukur Fountain, as well as in the following two days, during the Turkish bombardment of Belgrade.

In many places in Šumadija and other parts of Serbia, as well as among Serbs in the diaspora, a procession of cross-bearers passed on that day.

In some places, the litany from the church still goes to fields and vineyards today.

Duhovi is the patron saint day of several places in Serbia, and in some families, it is also the family slava.

This holiday is also the guild holiday of merchants.
