The World Health Organization (WHO) announced that approximately 112 Palestinian children are hospitalized daily in Gaza due to malnutrition, which, it states, is a direct consequence of the blockade and military attack by Israel on the enclave.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that the humanitarian situation in Gaza “exceeds catastrophic levels,” Wafa reported. He noted that out of 36 hospitals in the Gaza Strip, only 17 are partially functional, and none are operational in northern Gaza or in Rafah in the far south, which are the areas most severely affected by the ongoing conflict.
Tedros also stated that at least 500 people have been killed trying to reach food at aid distribution points controlled by the US and Israel, which operate outside the United Nations system.
He added that WHO was able to access Gaza this week for the first time since March 2nd, but only in a “very limited capacity,” which highlights the extreme difficulties humanitarian agencies face in meeting needs.
