Farmer and dairyman Miloš Sretović (35) from the village of Miločaj near Kraljevo, otherwise the father of four daughters, was left without the secure income he had every month from milk purchases, because the dairy he cooperated with canceled the purchase. He believes this has to do with posts on social networks about the milk purchase price, which he had been publishing in recent days.

Miloš Sretović (35) from the village of Miločaj near Kraljevo delivered between 40 and 45 liters of milk daily to a dairy in Kruševac, until the purchase was suddenly canceled.

Allegedly, the dairy stated that it “can’t break the truck because of him,” since his house is somewhat farther away from other farmers.

However, Miloš says for Nova.rs that in recent days he had been publishing purchase prices on social networks, which may be the reason for this sudden termination of cooperation.

“I’m not sure it’s because of that, but it’s quite a coincidence that the cooperation was terminated just when I publicly posted the calculation showing that the milk price dropped to 35 dinars. But okay, we move on, what’s done is done. I didn’t know that dairies censor the posting of calculations, although even if I had known, I would have done the same, so it doesn’t matter,” he says.

Modest and honest

Miloš has three cows and three heifers. It’s not much, but enough for him and his family.

“I have a wife, a mother, four daughters… Enough for us. Now I have less milk since some cows are pregnant, but still enough for us. When it became known that my purchase was canceled, people started contacting me to buy milk by the liter and everything I make from milk.”

He doesn’t beg anyone for anything, he says, adding that maybe it’s good that everything turned out this way.

“I started selling milk in 2018 to one dairy, and only later switched to this one in Kruševac. Until then we sold milk like this, at home, by the liter, and we lacked nothing. This man may have done me a favor.”

He points out that the role of farmers today is very difficult, and he blames the top of the state for that – President Aleksandar Vučić.

“The cause and source of all the problems faced by farmers and milk producers is Vučić and his SNS. I have no problem saying that. I haven’t been saying this since yesterday, but for a decade or more. Ever since I was a teenager I’ve been fighting against this scourge (the regime), and the best part of my life has passed in that fight. While the government is advancing, all branches of agriculture are regressing. Some small progress has been felt by regime associations and farmers who agreed to sell themselves. There is that too,” he states.

He emphasizes that he is neither the first nor the last whose milk purchase has been canceled.

“This will continue like this, you’ll see. Farmers had the biggest chance for change in 2023. Then I said the only demand should be the resignation of Vučić and the SNS, and we’ll easily deal with the conditions for farmers.”

Actively participates in protests

Miloš does not hide that he actively participates in protests and blockades by farmers.

Maybe that, to some extent, also had an influence on this consequence he is now suffering.

“Politics doesn’t interest me according to my personal stance. Tomorrow I won’t even be on the council of my village local community, that doesn’t interest me. However, now, at this time, politics must interest everyone because what has been happening in recent decades is not good and not healthy. This is voluntary euthanasia, believe me.”

About ten years ago, his family was exposed to great pressure and fear just because Miloš “was vocal.”

“They stopped my mother in Kraljevo, threatened to break my legs and knees. I later found out the name of the person who threatened me, but I didn’t have concrete evidence to be able to publicly say who it was. They offered me a job and money, but I can’t, I’m not that kind of person. The biggest problem is my mother, she’s very scared. My wife is silent for now,” he tells us.
