The court process against 12 students and activists from the organization Students Against Authoritarian Rule (STAV) and the opposition Movement of Free Citizens (PSG) begins tomorrow at the Novi Sad court. The trial starts at 9:30 a.m.

Citizen assemblies of Novi Sad have called for a support gathering titled “No One Is Alone” in front of the courthouse at 9 a.m.

“This is a message to all of us: be quiet or you’ll be next,” they said in the announcement.

PSG and STAV activists were arrested ahead of the large student and civic protest on March 15 held in Belgrade, under accusations of allegedly attempting to overthrow the constitutional order. They spent more than seven months in prison and later under house arrest.

These are student Lazar Dinić, activists Davor Stefanović, Mladen Cvijetić, Srđan Đurić, Marija Vasić, and Lado Jovović.

While they were in prison detention, activist Davor Stefanović was beaten, while professor Marija Vasić went on a hunger and thirst strike.

In addition to these six activists, six more STAV activists have also been charged with the alleged attempt to overthrow the constitutional order.

At the time of the arrests, they were abroad, where they still remain today.

They are Mila Pajić, Branislav Đorđević, Doroteja Antić, Jovan Dražić, Anja Pitulić, and Dejan Bagarić.

They will be tried in absentia.

The basis for the indictment was a wiretapped conversation about the March 15 student protest, which was released to the public by pro-government media.

Defense attorneys for the activists have repeatedly pointed out legal irregularities in this case in the media.

According to them, the only piece of evidence in this procedure—the wiretapped conversation—was not obtained legally, and the criminal complaint filed by the Interior Ministry does not specify what exactly was problematic in what was said during the conversation, but rather what the activists allegedly thought.

The defense has assessed that this is a classic political process against critics of the regime.
