The judge of the Basic Court in Pirot, Danijela Kostić, reacted to the police brutality that the public in Serbia has been witnessing in recent days and shared a photo on social media showing a police officer beating a man lying on the concrete. On the social network Facebook, she wrote that the prosecutor is obliged to react and open a case.
“Prosecutor, this man lying on the asphalt, handcuffed, is a citizen of this country. You are obligated by law to open a case and investigate. The people pay you, not a political party. A police officer who hits a man who is lying helplessly on the ground is no longer a police officer, but a common bully who has no place among the people who wear the coat of arms of the Republic of Serbia on their chest,” she wrote.
Let’s recall, the public has been witnessing scenes of police brutality in recent days. The police are beating and arresting citizens on the streets and trying to break up the protests, even though citizens have the right to peaceful assembly.
What was the reason for citizens taking to the streets?
The protests started again after, last week, SNS supporters threw pyrotechnics at citizens in Vrbas.
Then, citizens in all cities took to the streets, and there were conflicts between citizens and the police.
There are many videos on social media showing the police beating citizens, even minors, and using excessive force.
Videos of police violence have shocked the public in the region.
