Kevin Durant, the all-time leading scorer for Team USA, was a major problem for Serbia at the Olympic Games, something that Serbian national team coach Svetislav Pešić strongly emphasized during his fiery locker room speech.
Durant had not played for a month before the Olympics, yet he returned to action against Serbia in the first round. What followed was a basketball masterclass (5/5 from three), as Durant finished the game with only one missed shot and 23 points.
This infuriated Pešić, who stormed into the locker room and started shouting at his players. For the first time, this moment was revealed in the documentary series “Court of Gold”.
*”This Durant, the best player on the court, hits five threes on you, just like that. So, WHO ARE YOU GUARDING?! WHO?! HIM… YOU GUARD HIM!
You’re not watching anything, you’re not watching a single player, just watching him. My mistake. I should’ve put another guy on Durant. If we can’t see that ourselves, then what are we doing? He’s going to shoot, what else would he do?
He got the ball like… all alone, like a ghost,”* Pešić yelled, delivering a similar rant at halftime against Australia.
Before the semifinal match, Pešić made another strong statement, saying the team had to “tear Durant apart”.

Ahead of the final showdown, Pešić once again singled out Durant in a speech that drew particular attention.
*”Listen carefully now. If anyone benefited from these two games we played against them, it’s us. You felt them. You felt Durant. Stick to him, rip him apart.
Nobody here respects us. They’ve already announced who’s playing in the final—without us. So, please, let’s show them our pride,”* Pešić urged his players.
Just a few days after the documentary was released, Kevin Durant responded.

He decided to reply to Pešić.
*”It was truly special to be part of that story. The Olympics are always special to me, but these in particular.
I have great respect for the other countries we played against, as well as for their coaches, and it was interesting to get a glimpse into their locker rooms and hear all of that.
It even made me laugh a bit. That was a game to remember for me, and I’m glad people got to see it and relive the moment,”* Durant said.
