The Serbian diaspora, gathered in formal and informal groups located in more than 70 cities around the world, has signed the “Diaspora Edict,” calling on compatriots abroad to join the nearest communities in the places where they live in order to contribute to the struggle of students and citizens in Serbia “for the rule of law, a better society and a safer future for all citizens.”
The document sent to the media states that part of the diaspora has been “in a struggle against an autocratic regime that has normalized systemic corruption and crime in (Serbia)” for more than a year, and that around seventy of the signed groups are gathered around support for the student movement.
“Still determined in our support and inspired by the demands of the students, we are speaking out publicly exclusively as citizens united in the fight for justice and democracy, and not as representatives of the student movement. Respecting the diversity of views and opinions, the formal and informal groups of citizens listed below, active in the diaspora, share the same goal established by the Constitution: the establishment of the rule of law and social justice, in accordance with the principles of civic democracy, human and minority rights and freedoms, and European principles and values,” the statement said.
