The warnings of RHMZ and forecasts came true, heavy precipitation has hit Serbia, and the snow does not stop falling.
A state of emergency has been declared in Ivanjica, Nova Varoš, and Medveđa. On some roads, due to wet snow, trees have fallen, so caution is needed when driving. There are also problems with electricity supply in Golija and in the municipality of Brus.
Impossible to reach Crna Trava from any direction
Crna Trava does not remember a disaster of such proportions, says for RTS Slavoljub Blagojević, president of this municipality.
At this moment, it is impossible to reach Crna Trava from any direction, all regional and local roads are impassable.
There is neither landline nor mobile telephony, so they are practically cut off from the world.
The damage to the power grid is enormous, power lines are torn down everywhere, Elektrodistribucija crews are fixing failures only in places they can reach on foot.
The snow depth in Crna Trava is 40 centimeters.
In the municipality of Brus, the road Graševci–Smiljkovci is impassable due to snow.
Residents of the Studenica villages Ponore, Savovo and Ornice have been without electricity for over 24 hours, with the snow cover exceeding 50 cm, reports 192_rs.
Traffic suspended
On Mount Javor, towards Sjenica, traffic has been suspended due to trees that fell on the road.
For more than two hours there has been a standstill on the Zlatibor–Nova Varoš road because of a truck that skidded and blocked the entire highway this morning shortly after 9 a.m. due to snow on the road.
Long queues have formed from both directions, and drivers report from the lines that a crane is awaited. Traffic on this section has not yet been restored.
Heavy snowfall has paralyzed almost the entire municipality of Nova Varoš. As stated by the president of the municipality, Branko Bjelić, more than 80 percent of the territory is currently without electricity, and about 5,000 to 6,000 residents in rural areas have no power.
“The large amount of wet snow has caused huge problems with the high- and low-voltage power grid. Electricity is available only in the town center, part of the tourist zone, and in a few villages,” Bjelić told RINA.
He emphasized that schools this morning operated with difficulty or could not function at all, as heating did not work until power was restored in the town center.
“Emergency EPS teams are on the ground and working, but the snow does not stop falling. At 11 a.m. a session of the Emergency Situations Headquarters will be held to decide on further measures,” added the president of the municipality.
Bjelić pointed out that main roads are passable, but local and village roads are problematic due to broken trees and branches collapsing onto the carriageways and power lines. EPS crews, with reinforcements, are trying to repair failures, but the scale of the damage, according to Bjelić, exceeds their capacities. It was announced that snowfall will continue until late evening, which means that the struggle to restore regular electricity supply is expected to last in the coming days, reports RINA.
The entire territory of the municipality of Medveđa has been without electricity since this morning, and due to power issues, pumping stations are also not working, so there is no water.
Wet and heavy snow has brought down trees on several roads that are impassable, writes RTS.
In the mountainous part of Medveđa the snow depth exceeds half a meter.
Crna Trava is also without electricity, and there is neither landline nor mobile telephony. Several roads are also blocked due to fallen trees. Elektrodistribucija crews are in the field, but as long as snow continues to fall most failures on power lines will be difficult to fix.
Chaos in Lučani, people without power
Snow has been falling without stopping for more than 24 hours in the territory of the municipality of Lučani. In lower areas the cover is up to 5 cm thick, and in higher areas up to 30 cm.
The first snow also brought another, much bigger problem to the residents, as the weight of the snow on trees still covered with green leaves caused failures on the low-voltage grid.
“The heavy snow weighed down trees and caused interruptions in power supply in about 30 percent of the territory. What we currently know is that the power line leading to the villages of Goračići, Kotraža, Vučkovica, Grab, Gornji Dubac, Milatovići, Kaona is not working, and more than 3,000 residents are without electricity,” said Milivoje Dolović, president of the municipality, for RINA.
In some parts of Serbia, traffic is significantly hindered by snow, and additional caution is needed due to trees falling on the roads.
When the snowfall ends
“Heavy precipitation is expected in the first part of the day in the southwestern, southern, central and eastern regions, while in the afternoon there will be a gradual weakening of intensity,” announced RHMZ.
“Throughout today it will remain cloudy and cold with rain, in the hilly and mountainous areas of southwestern, southern, southeastern and eastern Serbia with snow and an increase in snow depth, while only in northwestern Vojvodina dry weather will remain. Wind moderate, occasionally strong, from the north and northwest.
The highest temperature from 3 degrees in the south to 13 degrees in the north of the country.”
