Ben is a young man who moved from Switzerland to Serbia seven years ago. He loves our country and says that even after all these years, he is still discovering differences in the way of life.

Although at first glance, the differences may not be so obvious, they are numerous and often work in Serbia’s favor.

“One of the differences is in housing,” Ben says on the TikTok account ovo.samo.kod.nas.ima.

His friends from Serbia often ask him what he likes about our country. However, when he tells them that one of the things he enjoys is the housing conditions, they don’t believe him.

“I notice that some of them don’t believe me. But… The last apartment I lived in while in Switzerland, from 2016 to 2017, I shared with two roommates in an old and run-down building. That was before the pandemic and the wave of price increases. The price? We paid 1,500 francs per month for a three-room apartment. That means 500 francs per person, not including electricity and internet costs,” he says.

Living with three roommates wasn’t always fun either.

“One of my roommates was a DJ. A fun guy, but there were times when he would come home at six in the morning or burst into my room saying, ‘Come on, let’s go out for a drink!’” Ben recalls, adding that he likes going out and having fun but not quite like that.

“If I didn’t like parties, I probably wouldn’t have chosen to live in Serbia. But I’m still happy that I now live in much more comfortable conditions,” he explains.

Ben from Switzerland says that Belgrade might not be the best example for comparison when it comes to rental prices, as rents have significantly increased in recent years.

“However, in other cities in Serbia, it’s still possible to rent an apartment quite cheaply. Even though rental prices in Belgrade have risen significantly, renting an apartment in the Serbian capital is still more affordable than in most European and North American metropolises,” he explains, giving an example.

“In 2023, the average rental price per square meter in Palilula was €11.49, while in the center of Belgrade, it quickly rose to over €15. In Zurich, prices go over €37, and in New York, they reach €50 per square meter,” he says.
