The President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, attracted attention with a post on his social network, Truth Social, which showed a list of countries whose immigrants in the USA most often use social assistance. The list includes about 120 countries and territories, ranking them according to the percentage of immigrant households that receive some type of assistance from the state.
At the top of that list were countries like Bhutan, Yemen, Somalia, and many others, where even more than half of immigrant households use federal benefits.
Serbia, however, is not on that list. Trump’s list contains only those countries whose immigrants exceed a certain threshold of using social programs (approximately 25%), which means that communities that rarely use state benefits were omitted from the display.
Immigrants from Serbia and other Eastern European countries often integrate through work visas or family programs, and their rate of using social benefits is below the threshold used by the Trump administration.
Critics of the Trump administration claim that the president uses selective figures to strengthen his arguments for strengthening the border and reducing social services for immigrants. On the other hand, supporters believe that data of this type indicate the unsustainability of an open immigration policy.
