A Serbian woman, who spent her student and first working days in America, specifically in New York, decided to share her experience publicly, opening the door to life in one of the most dynamic and expensive cities in the world.
Through an honest and detailed description on her TikTok profile “kanabrx,” as someone who moved to New York at the age of 17 and completed studies in business analytics, she spoke about her path to employment, as well as everyday life in New York, costs, and the people and ambition that make this city special.
“After finishing high school, I enrolled in college in New York. I received a partial scholarship, and my family covered the rest. I studied Business Analytics, which is basically statistics applied in business and finance. During my studies, I also did several internships, some paid, some not. If you studied here and got a job after college, you can work here for one year without sponsorship. That’s how I started, and after that, this company sponsored me. It’s true that it’s difficult to find sponsorship, I was a bit lucky, but it’s not impossible. As for visas and everything, I wouldn’t talk about that topic because I’m not an expert,” she said in the introductory part of her video.
“New York is the best city in the world”
And then she went on to reveal what, from her personal experience, life in New York looks like.
“As for living in New York, for me, New York is the best city in the world, and I knew from a young age that I wanted to be here. The three negative things people most often ask me about living here are:
One, is the city dirty? Yes, it is. It’s not the cleanest city in the world. It’s true that there are homeless people, trash, and dirt, however, the city allocates a huge amount of money for cleaning, and the air is completely OK, even though there’s a lot of traffic.

“I feel safe in Manhattan”
Two, safety. I mostly move only in Manhattan. I rarely go to Brooklyn or Queens, so I can’t speak for all of New York, but I feel very safe in Manhattan. Of course, I try not to go alone at night between midnight and five in the morning. I don’t wear headphones when I walk and I don’t talk to people I don’t know, but I generally feel safe; there’s a lot of police, and I haven’t had any incidents so far.
And the third item is the cost of living in New York. It is true that New York is the most expensive city in America. You can also look up this data online. The average salary here is $82,000 per year. That’s the average, and it’s for one person. I think much more is needed for a family,” she said.
Most people rent apartments
Regarding housing costs, she explains that most people in New York do not buy properties but live in rented apartments. The average rent for an apartment in the city is about $3,500 per month, while prices in Manhattan reach up to $5,500.
Food also requires significant funds â according to her, the average monthly cost for one person ranges between $200 and $300. As for transportation, most residents do not use cars but rely on the subway, for which a monthly pass is around $140.
Finally, she also highlighted the high tax rate which, depending on the income level, amounts to approximately 30 percent of the total earnings.
Positive sides of New York
She also listed the positive sides of this city.
“The positive side is that so many languages are spoken here, and you can meet people from all over the world. The city has an excellent structure, and it’s true that it never stops and never sleeps. The city also has a lot of culture, entertainment programs, sports, gastronomy, everything you can imagine. What is most important to me and what perhaps attracted me most to this city is that people here are incredibly ambitious, work very hard, and fight for themselves and their future.
Everyone wants to succeed, everyone wants to be better, and everyone is very motivated. I truly believe that if you put in effort and work, it will pay off, and I think the people who are here are proof of that. I hope this has helped someone, at least,” she concluded.
