Tonight, at the United Center in Chicago, on the occasion of the visit of Nikola Jokić and the Denver Nuggets, a Serbian Heritage Evening was held, which gathered several thousand Serbs from the region.
They all came to see the best basketball player in Serbia and the world in action, who, despite his team’s defeat by the home team Bulls, showed his class with another triple-double: 33 points, 12 rebounds and 14 assists, with a phenomenal shooting percentage (15-22).
What Nikola, unfortunately, did not show class in followed after the game, when hundreds of Serbian fans, including mostly children, waited for him in vain under the stands, hoping that he would traditionally appear to greet them and take pictures with them.
Unfortunately, Jokić lacked a bit of feeling for those who love him the most for a quadruple-double and a complete triumph. Although the hallways of the United Center echoed with “MVP, MVP!”, “We want Jokic” and “Kosovo is Serbia”, only Nikola Vučević, the star of the Chicago Bulls and the Montenegro national team, appeared at the agreed meeting, who kindly took the time to greet those who were waiting for him and take pictures with them.
What a shame!

And Nikola could have really tried, to set aside 10-15 minutes of his time, to witness with his own eyes how the eyes of hundreds of children would light up when they met and got to know their idol and hero. Him. Especially since he doesn’t come to Chicago, a city with so many ardent fans, every day, but ONCE A YEAR.
Nikola could have, but he didnt. We hope that he will correct the mistake next year. Because of those countless kids who adore him, and who tonight sadly, some of them with tears in their eyes, went home.
One detail that slightly spoiled an otherwise wonderful evening in which, before the basketball players, the first to come out onto the center of the court were Serbian folk dancers, young men and women from the “Soko” Folklore Group, who with their skills elicited applause from the Serbian as well as the American audience.
And then, when the NBA stars of the two teams appeared on the court, the “Branko Radičević” choir from the Church of the Resurrection in Chicago sang the American anthem, which was a delight for both the ears and the eyes.
In the audience, on the other hand, from the very beginning, the loudest were the children from the Moravac Folklore Group, who this time did not play, but instead cheered with all their might, wrapped in tricolors and with caps in the colors of the Serbian flag, so much so that they even attracted the attention of the famous Benny, the mascot of the Chicago Bulls, who handed them popcorn.
Their fervent support, however, did not help Denver, who led from the start of the game, and then faltered in the last quarter, primarily due to poor defense and 24 three-pointers conceded.
The best in the winning team was Vučević himself, who scored 20 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and had 6 good assists, and he was followed by Zach LaVine with 21 points (6 assists), and Lonzo Ball and Ayo Dosunmo with 18 and 17 respectively.
