The Serbian community in Chicago had a reason to celebrate last night! In the solemn hall of the Church of St. Nicholas, a fundraising evening was held to launch the Nikola Tesla International School, a new Serbian school in America that will be attended not only by Serbian, but also by children from other local communities.

The ceremony was attended and opened with a prayer by the vicar bishop of Kostajnica, Serafim, and was also attended by the former Serbian consul general in Chicago, Damjan Jović, who is now the state secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Belgrade, the current consul general Andrija Zečević, as well as respected representatives of the Serbian community from Chicago and all of America.

The evening began with a cocktail, followed by a gala dinner and a special cultural program, hosted by Andjela Marković and Serbian Times editor Antonije Kovačević, which was marked by the performances of the “Oko sokolovo!” Folkloric Ensemble.

The audience was also addressed by representatives of the school, as well as Milena Tatić-Bajić, president of the local Tesla Science Foundation, and Christopher Getty, mayor of the town of Lyons, where the school is located.

When asked how the “Nikola Tesla International School” will differ from other schools, Nikola Delić, a member of the school’s board of directors, said:

“The name Nikola Tesla itself suggests that this school brings innovation and the best in education for Serbian children. We want to educate our children in accordance with the best world standards. Hence the cooperation with Mr. Milutin Nikolić and his “Zvezdobrojci” school from Belgrade, which has incorporated all world methods and curricula. Our teachers will work with them, go through all the trainings, use the best of the best for our children here in Chicago”, Delić told Serbian Times.

TOGETHER IN A GREAT EDUCATIONAL UNDERTAKING: Milutin Nikolić and Nikola Delić

Milutin Nikolić from the “Zvezdobrojci” school emphasized the fact that life and technology are changing very rapidly lately and that the education of children must keep up with those changes and be different from what we are used to.

“I think we are on the way to creating the best school in the world. Zvezdobrojci in Belgrade are achieving incredible successes, and we are trying to raise that to an even higher level here at the Nikola Tesla School in Chicago. I am convinced that this is the right solution for all families, Serbian and American, because it is about solutions that do not yet exist on a global, world level.”

This is a new school model, a new way of teaching and preparing for a society that we don’t know what it will look like in the future because it is constantly changing and we have to prepare children for that. In the past 20 years, society has changed terribly, and in the next 20 years, those changes will go even faster, and it is expected that 6 out of 10 children who are in elementary school today will work in jobs that do not exist today. We must prepare those children not only by building their intellect, but also by building their imagination, emotional and social intelligence, concluded Nikolić.

For former consul Damjan Jović, who is one of the ideologues of the Nikola Tesla International School, this represents a dream come true:

A DREAM COME TRUE: Damjan Jović, State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Serbia

“We were together here when we started all this and it was, by design, perhaps the biggest project that the Serbian diaspora in America has started, and the greatest undertaking since the construction of the Nova Gračanica monastery. After several years that were not the easiest years in business terms for our diaspora here, despite everything, thanks to great effort and desire, our community’s dreams are slowly coming true and becoming reality. And of course I didn’t want to miss that, so I specially traveled from Belgrade for this occasion”, emphasized Jović.

Bishop Serafim was overjoyed that our community is investing in children’s education, as he believes that is the most important thing:

“Education is the foundation of our children’s being and we should open schools in as many places as possible, in as many parishes as we can. From the youngest age, from kindergarten onwards. So that our children are educated in the right spirit, because it is easy to happen today that, regardless of age, they find themselves in such an environment where everything seems acceptable and accepted to them, and simply stray in a direction where we, as Christians and Orthodox, have always been strangers. And here they will be in their own home. And culturally, and socially, and most importantly – spiritually”, said Bishop Serafim.

Watch the exclusive report we recorded on the spot, at the Fundraising Evening for the new Nikola Tesla School in Chicago:

There are currently two registered schools in the United States that have Serbian language, culture, and history in their curriculum, one in Chicago and the other in Milwaukee, and in addition to the Nikola Tesla International School, for which money was being raised at this evening, a Serbian school in San Diego, California, is also in the verification process.
