Students of the Second Kragujevac High School turned their backs on a professor who came as a replacement for their homeroom teacher, whose fixed-term contract was not renewed.
In the Second Kragujevac High School, a total of five professors did not have their fixed-term contracts extended after they expired.
Professors from the Second Kragujevac High School reacted this morning to the firing of five of their colleagues who had been working on a fixed-term basis. Simultaneously, support groups for student protests and citizens’ assemblies in Kragujevac are calling for a protest in support of the dismissed professors.
“The Plenum of the Second Kragujevac High School strongly condemns the firing of five of our colleagues who had been working in our school on a fixed-term basis. Their positions were filled by teachers from the list of technological redundancies and from some other lists; thus, their jobs were taken by other teachers based on criteria that are completely unknown to us, and our colleagues were left jobless,” their public and media statement says.
Political Retaliation Suspected
In the statement, they also note that these are young teachers who performed their jobs very professionally and dedicatedly, so the only logical explanation for their dismissal seems to be political unsuitability, or rather, their open support for student protests and participation in the months-long school blockade.
“We are aware that the order for such an action came from the Ministry of Education, an institution whose sole task, it seems, is to defend the interests of the ruling party, thereby violating the Law on Education which prohibits political activity in schools,” the Plenum of the Second Kragujevac High School told Danas.
According to them, this statement is “primarily an expression of our solidarity with our dismissed colleagues and an appeal to the authorities to stop the terror against education workers who are not political subservients and who work in accordance with the rules of professional ethics, respecting the universal principles of humanity and justice.”
At the same time, the Student Support Group 2025 Kragujevac and the Kragujevac Citizens’ Assembly have called for a protest in support of the dismissed professors. The gathering, titled “Against Retaliation, Against Dismissals, Against Injustice,” has been announced for Friday, September 5, at 8 PM in the pedestrian zone “near the Cross.”
