A man weighing 272 kilograms was rescued from his home in Florida using a crane and a transport shipping pallet, and the unusual footage has drawn attention on social media.
The unnamed man was brought to safety after suffering a “sudden medical emergency” on Tuesday in West Palm Beach, reports the Daily Mail.
He couldn’t go down the stairs
He was unable to go down the stairs or exit through the door due to his size and health complications.
Instead, rescuers used a crane and a truck to lift him out of the house and transport him to the hospital, as shown in the video.
Rescuers also had to cut out part of the apartment wall, along with several sections of the balcony railing. Firefighters carefully secured the patient to a sturdy pallet padded with cushions before lowering him six meters to the ground, where an ambulance was waiting.
Successful rescue operation
Paramedics then transported him to a local hospital for emergency care. Obese patients who require specialized medical assistance are known as bariatric patients.
Emergency services follow guidelines to ensure they are trained for the safe relocation of bariatric individuals. Around a dozen people took part in the rescue operation on Tuesday, which was successful, reports say.
The video posted on Instagram sparked numerous comments, with many expressing concern for the man’s safety.
New health guidelines
“Very sad,” one person wrote, while another commented: “They put this man on a pallet?!”
The story comes at a time when a major change in new health guidelines could lead to an increase in obesity among Americans.
Namely, more than 100 million citizens who are currently classified as overweight could, under the new standards, move into the obese category.
