“Whenever a film is selected, such as this one in the competition for an Oscar, in the category of non-English language, we symbolically gather the crew, friends, and media to watch the film once more and exchange impressions.”

The Film Center of Serbia and the production company Vision Team organized a ceremony marking the departure of the Serbian Oscar candidate, the film “Russian Consul” directed by Miroslav Lekić, to Hollywood.

The film, inspired by the text of Vuk Drašković, tells a story set in the dramatic 1970s, during crucial moments of the Kosovo crisis, which shaped the future coexistence of Serbs and Albanians in the Autonomous Province of Kosovo and Metohija.

The main actor, Nebojša Dugalić, who plays one of the leading roles, told Tanjug that he is proud to be part of a film that has been chosen to represent Serbia in this prestigious competition.

“We know that there are many levels of selection and influence in this process, but if nothing else, it is important that the film is watched and that it encourages people to ask new questions about us all,” said Dugalić.

He added that it was a pleasure to collaborate with Žarko Laušević (1960-2023) and that the team approached the topic with dedication, wanting to present the story objectively and based on facts.

“We wanted to illuminate that story from all sides, not to be biased or inaccurate, but to be factually based,” he emphasized.

Ivan Karl, director of the Film Center of Serbia, expressed hope that going to Hollywood would become a practice and tradition.

“Whenever a film is selected, such as this one in the competition for an Oscar, in the category of non-English language, we symbolically gather the crew, friends, and media to watch the film once more and exchange impressions,” said Karl.

He added that, although it is unrealistic to expect a high placement, the mere fact that the film is being talked about represents “a significant step forward.”

“We must bear in mind that 90 countries are participating in the race, investing significant resources in promoting and lobbying for their candidates. And then there is the American Academy, which has 5,000 members…”, explained Karl.

In addition to Laušević and Dugalić, the film stars Paulina Manov, Svetozar Cvetković, Danica Radulović, Konstantin Fidanov, Petar Zekavica, Meto Jovanovski, Nada Macanković, Slaviša Čurović, Enver Petroci, Tamara Aleksić, and many others.
