Following the news that was carried by all Serbian media, stating that the new US ambassador to Serbia will be Rod Blagojević, we called the former governor of the state of Illinois, but instead of confirmation, we received a denial.
“I have no ambitions to be an ambassador, and those who know me know that very well. This story came from sources who probably don’t wish me well, and it all started with an article in Politika, which is not very favorable to either President Trump or me. If the president does appoint me to any position, it certainly won’t be an ambassadorial one,” Blagojević said somewhat enigmatically for Serbian Times.
We remind you that the avalanche of news about Blagojević as the new US ambassador to Belgrade followed after an article in the American newspaper Politico, which was the first to publish that he was a likely candidate for this position.
Rod Blagojević was born in Chicago in 1956. He graduated from Northwestern University in 1979 and completed his law degree at Pepperdine University in 1983. Between 2003 and 2009, he was the governor of Illinois, when he was arrested after accusations of corruption. He spent eight years in prison, after which he was pardoned by President Trump in 2020.
Before that, he was a US congressman representing the state of Illinois. He is the second governor of a US state of Serbian origin (the first was George Voinovich from Ohio).
During his tenure as governor, Blagojević brought about important changes that expanded access to health care, improved education, strengthened public safety, and encouraged the growth of the Illinois economy.
His father, Radisav, was born in the village of Veliki Krčmari near Kragujevac, and then, as an officer of the Yugoslav Army, spent World War II in captivity.
Watch what he said in an exclusive interview for Serban Times…
Let us remind you, that Rod Blagojević is staying in Serbia, where he stated that the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, is leading an economic miracle where salaries have increased by 270 percent, and emphasized that he is proud to have met the president of the country from which his father comes.
