RESIDENTS OF MOSTAR ARE AFRAID: Ustaše graffiti on a monument to victims in a Serbian returnee village!

The monument to fallen Partisan fighters and civilian victims of World War II in the Serbian returnee village of Baćevići near Mostar was again covered in fascist symbols and the Ustaše salute “Za dom spremni!” this morning.

The residents informed the police, who immediately came to the scene and conducted an investigation.

The monument was destroyed in the last war, but it was renovated in 2022 and is located near the community center and playground in the village center where children and young people gather.

The president of the Coordination of Serbs in Mostar, Dušan Golo, who is a resident of Baćevići, says that the residents of this place are upset and afraid after this incident.
“Ustaše symbols were written on a monument to victims that the Ustaše killed. We are appalled by the sight that greeted us. Imagine what a shock this is for the children for whom today is the first day of school in Mostar,” Golo said in a statement for Srna.
He reminds that last year in August, the monument was also covered with Ustaše symbols and the children were attacked.

“Last year in August, the same thing happened, except that they attacked the children then. What kind of messages are these? Should we expect another attack, what follows this ‘Za dom spremni!’. This is a message that is constantly being sent. In Baćevići, some incident happens every month, but people don’t report it. It happens that in the middle of the night, they shout from cars ‘no sleep tonight, Chetniks’. People are afraid to report it and don’t want tensions, but the terror doesn’t stop,” says Golo.

A resident of Baćevići, Duško Savić, said that the residents of this village were very upset this morning.

“Such an act offends the memory of the victims of fascism, spreads hatred and intolerance, and violates the dignity of our community. We call on the competent institutions to remove these shameful inscriptions and find those responsible, and for all citizens to protect monuments and the common values of peace and respect. This is the second time that Ustaše symbols have appeared in the village,” Savić stated.
