Professor Vladan Joler resigned from the Academy of Arts in Novi Sad because he does not want to participate in the “normalization” that is being carried out with the help of armed forces at the University.

Besides him, Stevan Kojić also resigned, writes 021.rs.

Vladan Joler, until recently a professor at the Academy of Arts of the University of Novi Sad, publicly supported the students, and this year he won the Silver Lion, a prestigious award at the Venice Architecture Biennale.

He says that the events in the Rectorate building and the situation when the police “violently broke into the Rectorate” are one of the reasons for the resignations.

“On the night between Friday and Saturday, the rector, whose dismissal was demanded by all faculties and institutes of the University of Novi Sad, after eleven days of police occupation, with the help of armed forces, violently broke into the Rectorate and held us hostage for three hours. While we were sitting surrounded by armed men, he was walking ten meters away from us and laughing. A student from the Academy of Arts, who was sitting next to me, secretly contacted a lawyer, and he advised her to call our dean, Zoran Krajišnik. While other deans in their buildings stood between the police and the students, he refused the call three times. He also never called later to ask how his students and professors were,” explains Joler.

He adds that this is only a continuation of the policy of economic repression and blackmail to which they have been exposed for months.

“I don’t want to agree to that. I don’t want to implement their decisions and be an instrument of repression in their hands. I don’t want to participate in the ‘normalization’ that is being carried out with the help of armed forces. I don’t want to participate in the ‘normalization’ that is imposed by economic repression and intimidation,” points out Vladan Joler.

He says that he worked at the University of Novi Sad for 25 years because he wanted to, not because someone allowed him to.

“I am a free man and I will remain free. The university will be free when the entire country is free. I believe in freedom and that’s why I’m sure that I will return to the University of Novi Sad when we win it together,” says Joler.
