Europe has long been the most visited continent in the world, but there are still countries in this part of the planet that are quite “under the radar” for international tourists and which they do not want to visit because they do not perceive them as overly attractive or safe.
The company Riviera Travel analyzed Eurostat data on the least visited European countries, using statistics on the number of overnight stays realized in tourist accommodation in each state.
At the top of the list is Liechtenstein, in which only 228,579 overnight stays were recorded during 2024, according to the latest available data.
Given that this small state is located between Austria and Switzerland, it is not surprising that it offers impressive landscapes. The capital Vaduz is known for its castle, which offers a view of the Rhine Valley. Nevertheless, Liechtenstein is most often visited as part of one-day trips from neighboring countries, which explains such a small number of overnight stays.
In second place is North Macedonia, with slightly more than two million overnight stays in 2024, while third place was taken by Luxembourg, which recorded about 3.6 million overnight stays. Latvia and Montenegro follow in fourth and fifth place.
Below is the complete list of the ten European countries with the fewest tourists, according to the number of overnight stays.
Liechtenstein
North Macedonia
Luxembourg
Latvia
Montenegro
Estonia
Albania
Lithuania
Malta
Serbia
Serbia found itself in tenth place, which does not necessarily rank it among the countries with the lowest tourist visits, but it is certain that political events in the last year and a half have influenced the smaller number of tourists.
