Svetislav Pešić, the legendary Serbian basketball expert, at 76 years old, has become the oldest coach who has ever led a team in the Euroleague.

The until-recently head coach of Serbia made his debut this Tuesday in a new mandate on the bench of Munich’s Bayern in the round 18 duel against Hapoel Tel Aviv.

His experience and long-standing career, during which he won trophies across Europe, are now recorded in the history of the most prestigious club competition in European basketball.

He did this at 76 years, three months, and 25 days old, thereby breaking the record of Aíto García Reneses, who led Alba against Zvezda at 74 years, four months, and 19 days old.

Interestingly, the list also includes Dušan Duda Ivković, who led Efes against Panathinaikos at 72 years, five months, and nine days, and Dragan Šakota, who led Zvezda at 67 years, eight months, and 20 days.

In fifth place is the legendary Rick Pitino at 67 years, five months, and 16 days.

Pešić, known for working with big names in European basketball and now in his eighth decade, decided to accept a new challenge in Munich, a few months after leaving the position of Serbian head coach.

He began his coaching career in the late eighties, and during decades of work, he led numerous European giants, including Barcelona, Bayern, Žalgiris, Alba, and Crvena zvezda.

With Barcelona, he won the Euroleague in 2003, while with the Yugoslavia national team, he was a world and European champion.

He is one of the few who won the Euroleague in their career both as a player (Bosna, 1979) and as a coach (2003).
