Serbian national team wrestler Evelin Ujhelji won the silver medal at the World U23 Wrestling Championships being held in Las Vegas. In doing so, she achieved the greatest success in the history of women’s wrestling in Serbia.
She secured the runner-up title at the World Championships for wrestlers under the age of 23 with a convincing 12–2 quarter-final victory over India’s Diksha Malik. She then pulled off a major feat in the semi-finals, defeating reigning senior European champion Nadia Sokolovska of Ukraine 11–10, before losing to American Kylie Welker in the final.
It is worth noting that this is Evelin Ujhelji’s third medal at major competitions. She won bronze at the 2023 European Cadet Championships in Tirana and also claimed bronze at this year’s European Junior Championships in Skopje.
“Women’s wrestling in Serbia is on an upward trajectory, and we are ready to take on the challenge of qualifying for the Olympics as early as next year. We have worked hard and have talented girls, as we continue to prove by winning medals at major competitions. Just when we think we have reached the top, we surpass it at the next competition. We will not stop; we will keep going for more medals for Serbia and make a push for Olympic qualification,” said Dalibor Perović, coach of Serbia’s women’s wrestling team.
