The cooperation between the Serbian Army and the Ohio National Guard has come of age. Brigadier General Matthew Woodruff, the newly appointed commander of the Ohio National Guard, stated for RTS that the “South Base” project, as well as engineering undertakings, are some of the highest-quality forms of cooperation between the two countries. “Joint military cooperation increases Serbia’s capacity to be a strong and stable nation,” Woodruff pointed out.
General Matthew Woodruff, as a guest on the RTS Morning Program, pointed out that the partnership with Serbia is one of the most successful projects of the Ohio National Guard, not only in the military but also in the civilian domain, as it also includes the cooperation of state agencies and institutions, such as the University of Belgrade.
“In a military sense, we have done a lot of good things – such as the ‘South Base’ project and other engineering undertakings. These are some of the most valuable results of our cooperation. Our air force also participated in humanitarian projects, such as the renovation of institutions throughout Serbia,” Woodruff emphasised.
According to him, a strong friendship and a good mutual relationship have been built during these years. It is especially important, he says, to hold joint military exercises, because every engagement contributes to improving the capacity of both the Serbian Army and the Ohio National Guard.
“I feel at home when I come to Serbia. Everyone is very hospitable. We are grateful for the opportunity to grow, develop and contribute to regional stability together,” Woodruff said, adding that he sees the possibility for further expansion of the partnership, including trilateral cooperation with Angola and Serbia.
“Serbia’s security is also our priority”
He also pointed out that both Serbia and Ohio are modernising in accordance with modern technologies, especially in areas such as electronic warfare. He also recalled the “Halyard” mission, which testifies to the historical military connection between Serbia and the USA.
Speaking about the upcoming military parade “Unity Force”, which will be held on September 20 in Belgrade, Woodruff said that he expects to see modernised military equipment, in accordance with the investments that Serbia is making in its army, and announced the presence of a delegation from the Ohio National Guard.
“The national security of Serbia, both internal and regional, is of great importance. A strong Serbia is a stable Serbia. Our joint cooperation contributes to that goal,” Woodruff said.
Commenting on the announced official strategic dialogue between Serbia and the USA, which should be held in the autumn, General Woodruff assessed that it is a significant step for the Ohio National Guard as well, because it will contribute to even better training and cooperation of the armed forces of the two countries.
