The President of the Basketball Federation of Serbia (KSS), Nebojša Čović, revealed the details of the agreement with Dušan Alimpijević for his appointment as the head coach of Serbia.
KSS appointed Alimpijević as the new head coach on the same day that the contract of the previous coach, Svetislav Pešić, expired, and after his arrival had been speculated about following the failure at the EuroBasket.
“We discussed six or seven names. There is no need to mention the people, but a detailed analysis was made, and we concluded that Alimpijević would be the most suitable at this moment,” Čović stated while guesting on “K1.”
He explained that the contract with the new Serbian head coach is conceptualized so that it directly depends on the national team’s results.
“A contract has been signed until 2028, but there are points according to which, if the qualifications for the World Cup are not passed, there is no contract. If the qualifications for the Olympic Games are not passed, you can also terminate the contract. Likewise, if results are achieved, there are certain bonuses at both the World Cup and the Olympics. In that case, the contract is automatically extended until 2029 and the European Championship. Everything is linked to the result.”
Čović emphasized that the choice of Alimpijević as the head coach of the Serbian national team was aimed at rejuvenation and long-term stability of the national team.
“We need a young coach, but also support alongside him. Among others, that is Pešić. We should form an Expert Council and, according to the statute, as the President of KSS, I have the right to form such a group. I would like Pešić to be in that group and for him to expand that group with his colleagues. Professor Koprivica should also be there. Alimpijević agreed,” Čović said.
