Alex Preti has been identified as the man who was fatally wounded by federal agents in Minneapolis in an incident that occurred today during protests in the city.
The man killed by Border Patrol agents was identified as 37-year-old Alex Preti. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara stated that Preti was a resident of Minneapolis and a U.S. citizen, with a record containing only traffic violations. He also possessed a valid permit to carry a firearm.
Preti was a medical technician in an intensive care unit and worked for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). He graduated from the University of Minnesota in 2011 and was born in Illinois.
Activist who protested against ICE
The Associated Press reports that Preti was an outdoor enthusiast and a competitive cyclist. His father, Michael Preti, said that Alex was deeply affected by the actions of ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) in Minneapolis and across the U.S., viewing their actions as akin to “snatching people off the streets.” His mother added that he was very concerned about the direction the country was heading, particularly due to the rollback of environmental regulations.

His ex-wife described him as someone who might shout at law enforcement during protests but was never physically confrontational. She stated that he obtained a concealed carry permit about three years ago.
Union reactions
The Federal Government Employees Union (AFGE Local 704) issued a statement expressing outrage over the “killing of their member by federal agents.” They emphasized that Preti had dedicated his life to caring for veterans and called for an immediate, independent investigation, urging senators to withhold funding from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Response from DHS and Border Patrol
Border Patrol Chief Greg Bovino claims that the shooting was justified because Preti was carrying a handgun, had two full magazines, and did not have identification documents on him. However, Bovino did not specify whether Preti drew the gun or where the weapon was located at the moment of the shooting.
Details from the footage
Video recordings from the scene show Border Patrol agents knocking Preti to the ground. Another clip shows an agent removing a handgun from Preti’s waistband before another agent fired several shots at him, killing him on the spot.
Background of the incident: This is the third shooting by federal agents in Minneapolis this year. Rene Good was killed on January 7, while another man was wounded in the leg on January 14.
