The Police Directorate in Novi Sad is working intensively to identify the person who, today, at the corner of Bulevar Oslobođenja and Jaše Tomića, desecrated the place where citizens have been paying tribute for months to the victims of the canopy collapse at the Railway Station in this city.
“Given that the video of the event has been published in the media and on social networks, we call on citizens who recognize the man in the video or have any information about his whereabouts and movements to come forward by calling 192 or by contacting the nearest police station,” the Ministry of Internal Affairs said in a statement.
We remind you that yesterday in the afternoon, an unknown man desecrated the place across from the Railway Station in Novi Sad where citizens have been lighting candles for months for the victims of the canopy collapse in Novi Sad.
Last night, after the video spread on social networks, the people of Novi Sad spontaneously gathered at that place and cleaned the area, then relit new candles and left new stuffed animals in memory of the victims.

As the media reported, the suspect urinated on the flowers at the site of the citizens’ commemorative gathering.
Prime Minister Đuro Macut condemned the vandalism of an unknown person who desecrated the place of tribute to the victims.
“In the days when we remember the young lives lost at the ‘Vladislav Ribnikar’ Elementary School in Belgrade, as well as in the villages of Dubona and Malo Orašje, in Novi Sad, at the memorial site for our tragically deceased citizens, desecration and disrespect for the memory of the dead, which is not in the spirit of the Serbian people, is publicly displayed,” Macut emphasized in a statement from the Government of Serbia.
“I strongly condemn this inhumane act and demand that the perpetrator be found in the coming hours so that he can be held accountable for his actions,” Macut added.
The Mayor of Novi Sad, Žarko Mićin, also condemned the act. As he stated on Instagram, among other things, Novi Sad is a city of peace and tolerance, adding that such desecration of the tragedy site is absolutely unacceptable.
