Mark Brnović, an American lawyer and politician of Balkan descent, was buried in Phoenix, Arizona. Brnović, who had been nominated by President Donald Trump as U.S. Ambassador to Serbia, passed away on January 13 at the age of 59, likely due to a heart attack. The nomination was later withdrawn.
He served as Arizona’s Attorney General and was a candidate for U.S. Senate. A member of the Republican Party, Brnović held the office of Arizona Attorney General from 2015 to 2023.
During his tenure, he participated in several high-profile legal cases. Prior to being elected Attorney General, Brnović served as a federal prosecutor and as director of the state Department of Gaming, which regulates gambling. Later in his political career, he unsuccessfully ran for the U.S. Senate in 2022.
Brnović was born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1966. His parents were Serbs who immigrated from the former Yugoslavia — his father from Montenegro and his mother from Split, Croatia. He stated that his mother emigrated to the United States to escape communism.
Brnović and his family moved to Arizona when he was young. They were members of the local Serbian Orthodox Parish in Phoenix. He is survived by his wife Susan and two daughters, Milena and Sofia.
A video from Brnović’s funeral was shared on social media:
“Mark was respected and loved in Arizona. He was a devout member of the Serbian Orthodox Church and actively contributed to the Orthodox community here in Phoenix. Mark was first and foremost an American. But he was also Montenegrin. Through the church, he considered his Serbian identity a part of himself — and not only Serbian, but Croatian as well, since he had relatives on his mother’s side. He liked to jokingly say, ‘we are all sons of the Vich’s.’ In recent years, he often visited Montenegro. Leading Republican congressmen from Arizona, including Biggs, as well as Democratic Senators Kelly and Gallego, publicly bid farewell to him. Arizona’s governor and the mayor of Phoenix also paid tribute. In his honor, flags across the state were lowered to half-mast. I knew Mark for ten years. He was a friend. A positive and energetic person without a trace of malice. Vechnaya pamyat. Eternal glory and thanks to you, Mark.”
