In an exclusive interview with American journalist Tucker Carlson, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also mentioned Serbia, in the context of Kosovo’s independence and the West’s attitude towards international law. Comparing the situations in Crimea and Kosovo, Lavrov said the following:
“When the United States and other Western countries recognized the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo, they said that it was the implementation of the people’s right to self-determination. But there was no referendum in Kosovo. It was a unilaterally declared independence. After that, the Serbs turned to the International Court of Justice, which is usually not very determined in its judgments, ruled that if part of a territory declares independence, it is not necessary for the central authority to agree with that,” Lavrov pointed out and added:
“A few years later, the people of Crimea held a referendum and invited many international observers, representatives of parliaments of European countries, Asia, former Soviet republics… the same court said: ‘No, we cannot recognize this because it is a violation of territorial integrity.'”

When asked what he thinks of Trump, Lavrov stated:
“I met him several times when President Putin spoke with him and he received me twice in the Oval Office. I think he is a very strong person who seeks results, who doesn’t like to put things off. He is very friendly in discussions, but that doesn’t mean he is pro-Russian, as some try to portray him. The number of sanctions that his administration has imposed on Russia is very, very, very large,” Lavrov pointed out.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also said he hopes the West has taken “seriously” the recent use of a hypersonic missile by Moscow in Ukraine, and warned that Russia is ready to use “any means” to defend itself.
The United States and its allies “must understand that we would be ready to use any means to prevent them from succeeding in what they call a ‘strategic defeat of Russia’,” Lavrov said in an interview with American journalist Tucker Carlson.
Russia fired its new “Oreshnik” hypersonic missile at the Ukrainian city of Dnipro two weeks ago in a major escalation of the nearly three-year war. Russian President Vladimir Putin has since threatened to use weapons in an attack on Kyiv in response to Ukrainian strikes on Russian territory.
“We are sending signals and hope that the last one, a few weeks ago, with the new weapons system called ‘Oreshnik’… was taken seriously,” Lavrov said.
While insisting that Russia does not want to escalate the situation and wants to “avoid any misunderstanding” with Washington and its partners, Lavrov warned that he would “send additional messages if they do not draw the necessary conclusions.” Putin said the “Oreshnik” missile flies 10 times the speed of sound and cannot be intercepted by air defenses.
