Israel has gone out of control and is waging a war against Iran on its own. That is precisely what U.S. President Donald Trump must fix first, said Joe Kent, former director of the U.S. National Counterterrorism Center.

At the same time, he emphasized that conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was killed in 2025, opposed the idea of a military campaign against Iran.

-The first thing President Trump has to do is solve the main problem. The main problem is that the Israelis are out of control and are waging this war – he stressed in an interview with American journalist Tucker Carlson.

According to Kent, the United States will continue to defend Israel and ensure that it is not hit by ballistic missiles, but offensive actions on their part must stop.

-And he (Trump) needs to go very firmly to the Israelis, probably with a new team of diplomats, and say: ‘Enough is enough.’ Because this is our war. We are paying for it. We are shedding blood for it. This is not your war. If you decide to continue this offensive operation, we are leaving – Kent believes.

According to him, giving Israel a leading role in shaping U.S. foreign policy is a disservice to the American people.

It is dangerous for the United States to carry out a military operation against Iran together with Israel, because the sides have fundamentally different goals and standards of warfare, Kent assessed.

-American tactical goals are clear and concern only military targets (missiles, nuclear program, navy), while the Israelis are targeting ‘much more, going beyond military targets’ – Kent noted.

Charlie Kirk opposed the campaign against Iran

In addition, he emphasized that Charlie Kirk, who was killed in 2025, opposed the idea of a military campaign against Iran.

-The last time I saw Charlie Kirk alive was in June, in the West Wing, on the stairs. I greeted him, and he looked me in the eye and said very loudly – you were in the West Wing, it’s a small, tight space – and he said: ‘Joe, don’t let us go to war with Iran’ – Kent revealed.

Did Israel give coordinates to the U.S. for an attack on a girls’ school in Iran?

Kent also suggested that, given the high level of intelligence cooperation, it is likely that Israel provided the U.S. with coordinates for an attack on a girls’ school in southern Iran.

Asked by Carlson whether there had been cases where Americans launched attacks using coordinates provided by Israel, Kent answered in the affirmative.

-Yes, and we share so much intelligence with Israel that it (the use of Israeli data ahead of the attack on the school) is entirely possible – Kent assessed.

However, no one is raising that question, he noted.

Kent announced earlier this week that he is leaving his position because he disagreed with the U.S. military operation against Iran. Kent believes that the U.S. leadership has become a victim of a disinformation campaign aimed at pushing the United States into conflict with Iran, which did not pose an immediate threat to the U.S.

Kent, who resigned over the war in Iran, is under FBI investigation on suspicion of leaking classified information, three sources told Axios.

According to the sources, the investigation was launched before Kent resigned on Tuesday from the position of head of the National Counterterrorism Center. Details about the alleged leak have not yet been disclosed.

Charlie Kirk was killed on September 10, 2025, at a mass event at Utah Valley University. He is survived by his wife and two children. Twenty-two-year-old Tyler Robinson has been charged with the crime. Prosecutors plan to seek the death penalty.

The United States and Israel began striking targets in Iran on February 28, including Tehran, with reports of damage and civilian casualties. Iran is carrying out retaliatory strikes on Israeli territory, as well as on U.S. military targets in the Middle East. Washington and Tel Aviv described the military operation as a preventive strike and cited alleged threats from Tehran due to its nuclear program.
