The Turkish Ministry of National Defense announced that NATO air and missile defense forces, deployed in the eastern Mediterranean, intercepted an Iranian ballistic missile that was heading toward Turkish airspace.
As reported by the portal Türkiye Today, the missile was launched from Iran and, before being intercepted, flew over the territory of Iraq and Syria.
According to a statement published on March 4, NATO systems reacted in time and neutralized the projectile in the air. After the interception, parts of the interceptor missile fell in the district of Dörtyol in Turkey’s Hatay province. Turkish authorities confirmed that the recovered debris belongs to the missile used for the interception, and not to the projectile that was coming from Iran.
There were no fatalities or injuries in the incident.
The agencies Shafaq News and North Press state that the Iranian ballistic missile was intercepted above the city of Qamishli in northeastern Syria, not far from the Turkish border.
The Turkish Ministry of Defense stated that Ankara remains determined to protect its territory and citizens, emphasizing that the country’s security capacities are at the highest level. It was also warned that Turkey reserves the right to respond to any threat to its security.
