The organizers of the “Faculties at the Crossroads” action announced that they are leaving the intersection in front of the Government tomorrow.
As they stated, “the crossroads have given an answer – the fight for the University continues.”
For all those who wondered whether the institutions in this country are doing their job – our crossroads have given an answer. Instead of dialogue, we got ignorance; instead of solutions – the imposition of a semblance of normalcy. We spent seventeen days in front of the Government of the Republic of Serbia, at the crossroads, demanding the fulfillment of lawful and easily achievable demands. The first one has been partially met. For the third, there is an indication. But the second one – concerning the decree on work standards – is still treated as something to be “frozen,” not abolished, they state.
They remind that “the decree should not even have been adopted with amendments 5/35 and the controversial procedure, let alone remain in force in any form.”
“We believe that it represents blackmail and a means of control. We do not accept ‘freezing’ as a solution. Institutions again did not do their job. Therefore, we inform the public: on Thursday, June 26, we are leaving the intersection. The responsibility is still on the other side. We continue – by other means, in other places, but with the same goal,” they stated.
As initiators of the “Faculties at the Crossroads” action, they resolutely advocate, as they state, for the University to regain its rightful status and for professors never again to stay at a crossroads.
“We thank the students, assemblies, war veterans, bikers, IT blockade, informal associations of teachers and educators, and all other citizens who supported us in our efforts. We join the student gathering on June 28, as well as the call for early parliamentary elections, and we invite all who supported professors, associates, artists, researchers, scientists – to walk with us toward the same goal,” they state, adding that “the crossroads has become a symbol of the academic community’s voice that can no longer be ignored; it is now up to the Government of the Republic of Serbia to fulfill the demands – in full, without delay and political calculations.”
The “Faculties at the Crossroads” action in front of the Government of Serbia was carried out by a group of university teachers and associates gathered around the “Rebel University Belgrade” initiative, with the support of the Forum of the University of Arts in Belgrade, the Free University Novi Sad, the Free University Kragujevac, the Free University Niš, the Free State University Novi Pazar, and Proaktiv University in Priština with a temporary seat in Kosovska Mitrovica.
