The newly elected U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin wants to meet with him and that they are working on arranging a meeting, though he did not specify a timeframe for when it will take place.

Speaking on Thursday before a meeting with Republican governors at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, Trump said that the war in Ukraine must come to an end, Reuters reported. Trump’s return to the White House on January 20 raises hopes for a diplomatic solution to the war in Ukraine. So far, the U.S. has provided $175 billion in aid to Ukraine, including over $60 billion in military assistance.

However, it remains uncertain whether aid will continue at the same pace once Trump takes office, as he has expressed a desire for the war in Ukraine to end as soon as possible. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday that Putin would welcome Trump’s invitation for a meeting but noted that there has been no formal request yet.

“It would be more appropriate to wait until Trump officially assumes office,” Peskov stated.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Trump could play a decisive role in the outcome of the war in Ukraine and, as he mentioned, help in “stopping Putin.”
