Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker announced on Wednesday that he would oppose the planned deportation raids that newly elected President Donald Trump intends to carry out.
Pritzker’s statement came during an appearance on MSNBC, where he, alongside Colorado Governor Jared Polis, introduced a new alliance called “Governors Protecting Democracy” (GPD). The organization was formed in response to Trump’s victory in the presidential election.
“We will not allow human rights violations through raids coordinated with local authorities. This is unacceptable, and in Illinois, we will not condone it,” Pritzker said, adding that he would also oppose any potential use of the National Guard to carry out deportations.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson echoed his support for Pritzker’s stance, stating that the city’s police department would not cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the deportation of migrants.
Tom Homan, Trump’s nominee for head of the Border Patrol, recently announced the possible return of workplace raids, a practice that the Biden administration ended in 2021. Homan also announced tougher measures against drug cartels.
The GPD, as stated, will work on “strengthening the foundations of American democracy through interstate cooperation” by developing manuals, reinforcing institutions, and creating new strategies.
