The President of the United States, Donald Trump, said today that Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed not to conduct attacks on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities for seven days due to, as he stated, the extremely low temperatures in the region.
“I personally asked President Putin not to strike Kyiv and other cities for a week, and he agreed to that,” Trump said at a cabinet meeting at the White House, citing “extremely cold weather” as the reason for the request, the Guardian reports.
He added that some had advised him “not to make the call,” because, they said, he would not receive such a concession—but that the Russian president agreed nonetheless.
Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal said yesterday that due to power shortages caused by Russian shelling in Kyiv, 610,000 consumers were left without electricity.
Ukraine’s largest electricity producer, the DTEK Group, earlier announced that Kyiv is switching from emergency to temporary power outage regimes.
