A bus driver from Sri Lanka, working on Belgrade city transport line 56, returned a bag containing a laptop to a passenger who had forgotten it on the vehicle.

Nemanja Vukmirović was finishing errands in the city when he accidentally left his valuable bag on the bus.

“I got on bus line 56 when my phone rang, and since there was some noise, I got off at one of the stops. You can imagine the panic that gripped me when I saw my laptop was gone,” Nemanja told Euronews Serbia.

A dispatcher at a transport company, who had worked in Berlin for years and now performs his job from Belgrade, wasn’t sure about the procedure for lost items in public transport. So, he said, he called GSP officials and waited at the terminal, hoping to find it.

“I thought there was no chance, because that bus goes from Petlovo Brdo to Zeleni Venac, and who knows who gets on and off. I waited at the last stop and asked every driver if anyone had reported anything. I couldn’t believe it when I saw it,” the interviewee said.

It turned out that the forgotten laptop had been on the bus the entire time. The driver found it during a routine check of the seats after passengers had exited the vehicle.

“I gave him a tip, but I wanted to give him more, I just didn’t have more cash on me at the time. The laptop is very important to me. I’d say I’d rather have left my head. It has all my personal information, as well as company data, everything related to distributors and banks we cooperate with – the most valuable information,” Nemanja explained.

He has nothing but praise for the honest Sri Lankan driver, whose photo he posted out of gratitude in the Facebook group “Lost, Found, Stolen, Belgrade GSP and Surroundings.”

“All credit to him. Something like this has never happened to me before. I would have expected to have my lost luggage returned in Germany, though Germany isn’t what it used to be either,” the interviewee added.
