The potential deployment of German troops in Ukraine could only take place after a ceasefire, said Armin Laschet, Chairman of the Bundestag Committee on Foreign Affairs, as reported by the television channel N-TV.
Laschet emphasized that Ukraine needs reliable security guarantees, including those that would come from the United States. He recalled that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz had previously promised the possibility of deploying German soldiers at the Ukrainian border, but that the final decision depends on developments on the ground.
“Whether the Bundeswehr will ultimately be deployed will depend on the circumstances and political decisions at the given moment,” Laschet stressed.
It should be noted that on January 6, a summit of the so-called “coalition of the willing” was held in Paris, attended by numerous European leaders, as well as U.S. President’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and White House adviser Jared Kushner. The Ukrainian delegation, led by President Volodymyr Zelensky, was also present.
After the summit, Zelensky, together with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron, signed a declaration outlining the possibility of deploying multinational forces in Ukraine once the conflict ends.
