The Director of the Institute for Cardiovascular Diseases “Dedinje,” Academician Prof. Dr. Milovan Bojić, is this year’s laureate of the prestigious National Award “Imperial Culture,” which bears the name of the distinguished Russian professor Eduard Volodin. Academician Bojić was awarded in the category “Slavic Brotherhood,” and the recognition was granted for his book entitled “It Was Not in Vain” (Rus. “Ne naprasno bylo”), the Institute for Cardiovascular Diseases Dedinje announced.

This award is traditionally granted by the Union of Writers of Russia, in cooperation with the magazine “New Book of Russia,” the Saint John Chrysostom Foundation, and the “Fyodor Ushakov” Center. The decision on the laureates was made by the Committee for the Awarding of this prestigious cultural prize, composed of the most eminent representatives of the Union of Russian Writers, academicians, and cultural figures, after selecting from more than 300 works by 72 publishers worldwide, published in the period from 2023 to 2025.

Along with the ceremonial diploma, the recipient was also presented with a statue—a bust of Saint Righteous Admiral Fyodor Ushakov, one of the most famous Russian military commanders of the 18th century, a saint of the Russian Orthodox Church, and the patron of the Russian naval forces. This symbolism further emphasizes the character of the award itself, which is given to those who, through their work, preserve historical memory, spirituality, and the inseparable ties among Slavic peoples.

“Dear friends, thank you for the award, which brings me great honor and pleasure to be among today’s laureates, as well as among those who have received this recognition over the past decades. My book is a testimony to a time, to a suffering but unbowed country, to the criminal aggression of the NATO alliance and the unprecedented sanctions imposed on it, and to what a people and its inhabitants can nevertheless achieve under such conditions. It carries the message that only what we have definitively given up is lost, and that this world belongs only to those who try. In that difficult time, I was the commander of the Civil Protection of Serbia, who defended his country from NATO aggression, while at the same time performing the duty of director of a healthcare institution. Given the medical results achieved, I was recently elected a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and I promise that I will do everything to speak, in the very near future, the most beautiful language in the world, which is the Russian language,” Academician Bojić said to those present upon receiving the recognition.

The autobiographical work “It Was Not in Vain” has been recognized by Russian critics as a significant contribution to contemporary literature that addresses issues of honor, perseverance, and shared destiny. In the explanation of the award, it is emphasized that through his work Academician Bojić affirms values that are the foundation of Slavic culture.

In addition to Prof. Dr. Milovan Bojić, in the category “Slavic Brotherhood” for fidelity to the Slavic idea, General Vladimir Lazarević from Belgrade was also awarded, once again confirming the high reputation of Serbian creators in the highest cultural circles of the Russian Federation. The “Imperial Culture” Award was established in honor of Professor Eduard Volodin, one of the most significant Russian thinkers and theorists of culture.

Every year, on December 11, the commission announces the names of those who have contributed to the preservation of Slavic culture and spirituality through their literary, scientific, or artistic work. The ceremonial award presentation was traditionally held in Moscow on the feast of Epiphany.
