Slobodan Jovičin (65) from Kikinda, donated blood for the 184th and final time, making him an undisputed record holder in this part of Vojvodina.
Due to the age limit, the great humanitarian will no longer be able to participate in voluntary blood donation drives, something he has done for a full 47 years. According to his calculations, over nearly five decades, he has donated 65 liters of blood and saved 550 lives:
-One unit of blood can save three human lives. I don’t need any greater recognition than that. I remember my first donation well. It was November 28, 1978. The reason for my first donation was to avoid a math test, but in the end, it turned out that nothing is accidental. I continued a family tradition and eventually surpassed my father. Unfortunately, science has not yet managed to produce artificial blood. This is the only way to collect and pass it on to people who need it – Jovičin told Kurir.
The desire to help someone was the sole and exclusive motive for him to come and donate blood whenever he had the opportunity. Besides Kikinda and Serbia, he also did so in Africa:
-By chance, it was in Libya. My wife worked in a clinic of an oil company, and I went to visit her. Besides Kikinda, I donated blood in Belgrade and Novi Sad. I invite young people to come and donate blood. It’s not painful, and it’s good for your and others’ health – Jovičin stated.
