The Catholic parish in Novi Travnik has called for a boycott of the film “The Wedding” with the explanation that it insults and represents Christianity in an ugly way.

“The film that is ‘conquering’ audiences across the region these days, in a sad, ugly, and pathetic way, insults the greatest and most important values of a religion – specifically Christianity, mentioning God and the most important realities and truths of our salvation in a vulgar and blasphemous way. The blood of Christ, which was shed for the salvation of our souls, becomes an object of humor and entertainment, and God an object of ridicule and games,” stands in the post of the Parish of the Ascension of the Lord Novi Travnik on Facebook.

They assessed that “today there is too much freedom, and little responsibility or none at all.”

“What kind of freedom is it that insults others’ fundamental religious truths? Where is the responsibility? Freedom of artistic expression is important and necessary for every healthy society, because art should pose questions, encourage thinking, and speak about reality,” they stated in the post.

They added that “freedom does not exclude responsibility,” and that “art that consciously insults or trivializes the religious beliefs of a large number of people does not contribute to dialogue, but deepens divisions.”

“It is possible to create powerful, critical, and contemporary works of art without profanity, insulting sacred things, or disparaging someone else’s faith. Respect for religious feelings does not mean censorship, but a culture in which freedom of expression and mutual respect do not exclude, but complement each other,” emphasized this parish.

They called on the members of this parish to boycott the film “The Wedding” in Novi Travnik on February 11, which is, as they said, the feast day of Our Lady of Lourdes and World Day of the Sick.

They announced that on that day, after the mass at 4:00 PM, the church will remain open until midnight so that people can “come and pray for all artists, actors, directors, and all others who in this and similar ways insult the religious freedoms of any religion, faith, or person.”

“The Wedding” is a film comedy directed and written by Igor Šeregi, made in an international co-production between Croatia and Serbia.

The main plot follows two wealthy families – one from Belgrade, the other from Zagreb, whose son and daughter fall in love abroad, but an unplanned pregnancy accelerates the meeting of their parents, and the wedding must be held in strict secrecy.

According to media reports, 400 thousand people have watched the film in Croatia, and in Serbia more than 130 thousand so far.
