Germany’s three-party ruling coalition collapsed on Wednesday evening after Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced he would fire Finance Minister Christian Lindner due to persistent disagreements over economic reforms.
Crisis talks within the coalition of Scholz’s Social Democratic Party, the Greens, and Lindner’s Free Democratic Party reached a climax after the FDP published a document with demands for liberal economic reforms that the other two parties found difficult to accept.

During a dramatic meeting of the leaders of the three parties on Wednesday evening, Lindner told Scholz that he did not see a way to continue the coalition and called on him to pave the way for early elections in Germany.
This led Scholz to announce that he would fire him, two sources told POLITICO.
Scholz could potentially try to continue governing in a minority government, but he does not have a majority to pass the budget, increasing the likelihood of a vote of no confidence and early elections – potentially as early as March.
