Russian journalists who arrived to cover the upcoming elections have been detained at a US airport. The visa of a cameraman from the newspaper “Izvestia” was revoked for “administrative reasons,” said Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, to Sputnik.
According to her, on the night of October 29th in US time, Russian correspondents from the newspaper “Izvestia” traveled to the US to cover the presidential elections to be held on November 5th.
“They did not go there incognito, they went based on issued documents. They stated their purpose – to work as journalists, to cover the elections. They went through all the procedures. They got visas, permits, took a whole package of documents and went to the US. There, they were met at the airport, detained, and interrogated. The interrogation lasted several hours. After that, the cameraman of the group was not allowed to cross the border. His entry visa was revoked, and the reason given was administrative reasons. It’s unclear what that means. So, just like that, administrative,” Zakharova said.

As she added, while all this was happening, the US administration did not inform Russian diplomats or the Russian embassy in Washington about the detention of Russian Federation citizens.
“Therefore, our colleagues were not informed and could not provide them with assistance,” Zakharova emphasized.
