Mevko Berbić, a builder from Herzegovina and a member of the Islamic faith, has for years been sending a strong message of coexistence, humanity, and interreligious respect through his actions. For his selfless construction and renovation of Orthodox churches, the municipality of Berkovići yesterday awarded him the Vidovdan Charter as a symbol of gratitude for his contribution to religious communities.
“I worked on the church in Gorica, in Trusina, the Parish Home here in Berkovići, and many other religious buildings. This recognition means a lot to me because a person needs to earn such a thing, and I am honored to have received it,” said Mevko Berbić.
Although a Muslim, Mevko has been building Serbian Orthodox churches throughout Herzegovina for years. As he states himself, he often, even with back pain and under therapy, personally carried materials and helped on construction sites—all for free, with his own donations. Because of his kindness and dedication, Mevko has become a symbol of Serb-Bosniak friendship and a man who, by his example, breaks down prejudices and barriers.
A video story about his work was published yesterday by the Instagram page official.bih.srb.hr.cg, which promotes positive stories and interpersonal solidarity in the former Yugoslavia. The video caused a wave of emotions and support, and thousands of people wrote in the comments that the Balkans would be a better place if there were more people like Mevko.
His life philosophy is simple—respect people regardless of faith and nationality, and leave good deeds behind.
