The plenum of employees at the National Library of Serbia (NBS) announced today that the goals and mission of this institution of public importance and central national library are seriously endangered by the construction of a public, three-story underground garage in the immediate vicinity of this institution.
Representatives of the NBS employees have therefore called on citizens to sign a petition to stop the works on this construction, which also includes a proposal to conduct a revision of the entire project.
They also announced that questions they sent to the competent institutions regarding this project have remained unanswered for months, including those asking why the library has not received the expanded storage facility, the start of whose construction was announced by the highest official of the Ministry of Culture in 2021, or whether the expansion of the storage facility has been postponed, suspended, or rejected. “Is there a detailed plan for the protection of the building, materials, and employees in case of land subsidence, water penetration, and potential explosions in the garage? Is there a plan for the protection of the building, library and information materials and sources, employees, and users in case of unforeseen problems and dangers that may arise due to extensive works on the underground garage in the immediate vicinity of the NBS? Did the competent institutions react when, due to initially unplanned accompanying works on the construction of the garage, an integral staircase and the curb of the NBS building towards Skerlićeva Street were demolished?” are some of the questions that the employees sent to the institutions.
They also asked if a solution has been planned for the relocation of the fuel tank and the provision of a heating system in the NBS for the next heating season, whether the Belgrade Public Utility Company “Parking Servis” has abandoned its request for the national library to urgently relocate its fuel tank or find a new solution for the building’s heating system. They also asked if the administration has received a response and protection from the competent institutions on this issue, as well as why the NBS does not belong to the protected cultural-historical complex of the Svetosavski plateau.
