Dejan Tomašević, as the sole candidate, was elected as the new president of this body, and all 59 delegates at the assembly voted for him.
Immediately before his appointment to this position, Tomašević resigned from the post of member of parliament in the Serbian Assembly, given that as a person with a political function he would not be able to preside over the Olympic Committee.
He also served as Vice-President of the Basketball Federation of Serbia in 2011, as well as the Secretary-General of the BSS in 2015.
During his basketball career, Tomašević played for the two largest Belgrade clubs, Crvena Zvezda and Partizan, while wearing the Budućnost jersey he was named the EuroLeague’s Most Valuable Player in the 2000/01 season, and he won the aforementioned competition with Panathinaikos in 2007.
With the national team of Yugoslavia, he won three European Basketball Championships (1995, 1997, and 2001), two World Championships (1998 and 2002), and a silver medal at the 1996 Olympic Games. Alongside Dejan Bodiroga, he represents the most decorated basketball player in the national team after the breakup of the SFRY.
